When you think of Africa, your mind undoubtedly turns to sunny days in beautiful wild environments and the teaming wildlife that make this corner of the world so very special. It’s time to take your African adventure to a new level. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge is perfectly positioned to act as your home base to explore one of the subterranean wonders of the world- the Cango Caves. This is an adventure that needs to be on any Karoo visitors' must see list, and today we’re looking at why everyone should add this spectacular experience to their itinerary during their stay with us.
There are many reasons why this exceptional attraction is considered one of the world's great natural wonders! The Cango Caves are a series of ancient dolomitic limestone caves showcasing the beauty of nature's intricate handiwork in glorious spectacle. This makes the area a popular tourist destination and a remarkable geological formation all in one.
Stretching for over 4 kilometres through a series of narrow passageways, grand chambers, and stunning stalagmite and stalactite rock formations, the Cango Caves are estimated to be around 20 million years old. One of the oldest cave systems accessible to humans. In fact to this day we’re not even all that sure what lies at the greater depths of the caves. Before the advent of portable, reliable lighting, we could only explore the most surface levels of the caves, the dark chill of the surrounding rock soon enveloping intrepid explorers and passing hunter-gatherers alike and igniting our most primitive fears. Today, we can venture deeper, but there are still further mysteries to uncover, and that awesome, primal sense of power is no less vivid just because we can see better.
Apart from their breathtaking natural beauty, the Cango Caves also hold great archaeological significance for this very reason. Ancient artefacts and remains from the San people, the indigenous hunter-gatherer inhabitants of the region, have been discovered within the upper caves, including some carefully protected rock art paintings you can still see today. With their geological wonders and cultural history, the caves attract visitors from all around the globe, offering a memorable experience in the heart of one of South Africa's most beautiful natural spots, the Karoo. If you’ve ever wanted to expand your understanding of what it means to be African, and what this spectacular land offers the world, a trip to the Cango Caves is a must! You’ll find yourself awed and humbled by the unique vista around you.
Today, visitors to the Cango Caves have the opportunity to explore a much larger portion of the vast cave system through expert guided tours. These tours will take you deep into the caves, allowing you to marvel at the impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations that have developed over thousands of years. The cave chambers have intriguing names, like the Great Hall, the Bridal Chamber, and the Fairyland, so it’s easy to let your imagination run wild in the evocative underground landscape that surrounds you. You’d be forgiven if you expect to encounter some busy Tolkein dwarves (or even a scary Balrog) around each corner, but the local guides are well trained in safety procedures as well as the environment, so don’t be scared!
The Cango Caves offer different tour options catering to various levels of boldness and physical ability. The Heritage Tour takes visitors through well-lit pathways and showcases some of the most famous formations, making it perfect for families, children and older individuals
who want to experience this one-of-a-kind landscape for themselves. For the brave and able-bodied among us, the Adventure Tour provides an even more thrilling experience! Squeezing and crawling through narrow passages and tunnels to discover chambers hidden even lower beneath the earth's surface.
Lying just outside Oudtshoorn enroute to the Cango Caves, Buffelsdrift Game Lodge is the perfect overnight destination if you’re looking to indulge in one of the most unique global tourist experiences in the world, the Cango Caves definitely earns their spot on your Karoo itinerary.
